  • 1/2 cup (110 g) brown sugar
  • 3 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 9 tbsp (126 g) unsalted butter for caramel
  • 3/4 cup (165 g) brown sugar for caramel
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream for caramel
  • 8 oz (226 g) cream cheese, cold
  • 2 cups (260 g) powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your cake pans.
  2. Melt unsalted butter over medium heat until golden brown and nutty. Let cool slightly.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, buttermilk, and cooled butter; whisk until smooth.
  5. Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For caramel sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat; stir in brown sugar and heavy cream until smooth.
  8. For frosting: Beat cold cream cheese until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar until fluffy.
